Proud Boys and other extremist groups added to Canada‘s terrorist list

NDP Motion calling for this designation passed the House a Commons unanimously weeks ago.

Today, the federal government finally designated the proud boys as a terrorist organization and place them on the terrorist list. This is called for when the House of Commons unanimously passed a NDP motion demanding the government take this action on January 25, 2021. Laurel Collins NDP MP (Victoria) stated “This designation gives the government and enforcement agencies additional tools to deal dangerous extremist hate groups. These groups promote white supremacy, have been using violent methods, and need to be dismantled. I’m glad to see the government listen to the NDP’s call. This is a very positive first step, and we still have a lot more work to do to address hate groups and white supremacy in Canada.”

The designation as a terrorist group allows for legal and financial ramifications for people participating in or who are otherwise tied with these groups. Specifically, the criminal code includes charges for people or organizations that deal with property or finances have a listed entity. It also criminalizes certain actions such as training and recruitment.

Further, those trying to enter Canada may not be allowed if they are found to be affiliated with a listed group, and the public safety minister can revoke passports if anyone deem to pose a threat to travel to engage in terrorist activities

In September 2020 the US department of homeland security acknowledged that white supremacist groups remain the most persistent and lethal threat in the United States. The Canadian Security Intelligence Agency (CSIS) Director David Vigneault said in 2019 that the agency is very troubled by “the number of ultra right wing extremists” active in Canada.
