National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30th, we reflect on the legacy of colonialism and how it continues to impact Indigenous communities today.

Together, we honour the Survivors of residential schools and mourn the thousands of children who never returned home. The traumas and generational impacts of genocide can still be felt today. The Canadian government has a legal and moral obligation to correct these wrongs, and we must commit ourselves to the families and communities still fighting for justice.

My NDP colleagues and I know that much more needs to be done, if we are going to advance true reconciliation. We are committed to this vital work in partnership with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples across Canada.

Recently, we used our leverage in parliament to secure $8.3 billion for Indigenous housing ($4 billion for on-reserve, $4.3 billion for off-reserve), $724.1 million to support Indigenous women, children and 2SLGTQ+ people for escaping gender-based violence, and $1.3 million for the creation of the Red Dress Alert system. We will continue pushing the government to keep their word and implement these funds with the urgency Indigenous communities deserve.

If you or someone you know has been affected by the residential school system and need support, you can call the Indian Residential School Survivors Society 24-hour crisis line at 1-800-721-0066.
